애플이 2007년부터 자사 제품에 적용한 터치스크린 기술이 미국 특허를 획득했다.
22일(현지시각) 주요 외신들은 미 특허청(The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office)이 애플의 “다기능 휴대용 단말기의 터치스크린에 관한 핵심 기술”을 인정했다고 보도했다. 이번 특허 출원으로 HTC 등 터치스크린 모바일 단말기를 제공하는 경쟁사들에게 급제동이 걸릴 것으로 보인다.
미 특허청에 따르면 사용자 손가락(들)의 접촉과 움직임에 터치스크린이 반응하는 애플의 기술에 관해 특허(U.S. Patent No 7,966,578) 획득을 인정했다.
외신들은 미 특허청이 애플 아이폰에서 선두적으로 적용해온 정전기식 멀티터치 인터페이스의 핵심 기술을 인정했다고 보도했다. 또한 이에 따라 현재 스마트폰에서 널리 사용되고 있는 멀티터치 인터페이스에 대한 광범위한 새로운 특허 전쟁이 발발할 것이라고 예상했다. 아래는 미 특허청의 애플 특허 획득 관련 설명이다.
"A computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display, comprises displaying a portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen display," the patent abstract reads. "An N-finger translation gesture is detected on or near the touch screen display. In response, the page content, including the displayed portion of the frame content and the other content of the page, is translated to display a new portion of page content on the touch screen display."
이번 애플의 터치스크린 특허로 HTC, 삼성전자, 모토로라, RIM 등 광범위한 스마트폰 제조업체들에게 영향을 미칠 것으로 전망된다.
하지만 삼성전자나 LG전자 등 정전기식이 아닌 감압식 터치스크린 기술을 채택한 스마트폰은 이 특허 영향에서 피해나갈 수 있다. 또 세부 사항에 크게 영향 받는 특허 기술의 특성상 터치 인식을 한 손가락이냐 두 손가락 이상이냐는 점도 논란 대상이 된다.
그러나 이번 특허에서는 ‘n-손가락’이라고 규정했다. 정전기식 터치스크린 기술에서 애플이 대단히 유리한 고지를 차지했다는 점은 분명해졌다. 타 스마트폰 제조업체들이 정전기식 터치스크린을 채택할 경우 애플에 라이선스료를 지급하지 않고서 해결할 수 있는 탈출구가 매우 좁아진 것으로 볼 수 있다.
또한 사람의 손과 같이 전기가 통하는 물체로 터치하는 정전기 방식이 삼성전자나 LG전자의 감압식(화면을 눌러 압력을 인식)보다 감지률 및 인식률이 더 뛰어나다는 평가를 받고 있는 만큼 감압식 터치스크린의 스마트기기에서는 인식률을 향상시킬 수 있는 기술 개발이 요구되고 있다.
